What is a Wedding First Look?
It is a private moment before the ceremony, where the couple sees each other for the first time. This can be in a quiet and intimate space. Besides you, the photographer will be with you to capture the moment. It’s the perfect opportunity to share an emotional moment before the whirlwind of the ceremony.
For some couples, it’s a deeply personal and intimate experience, while for others, waiting until the ceremony is part of the magic, as it was for Raquel and Matthew at their wedding at The Mulberry in New Smyrna Beach.

The Benefits of having a Wedding First Look
- More Time to be Present with Your Guests: A first look at weddings allows couples to get many of their couple portraits out of the way before the ceremony, giving them more time to celebrate with their guests afterward. This includes not just the couple’s portraits but also the family pictures and the wedding party.
From my experience as a Wedding Photographer: I’ve seen so many weddings where the couples wish they had time for their cocktail hour. But they couldn’t because they didn’t have a first look.
Think of this: Couples portraits, wedding party photos, and family photos can take one hour and 30 minutes minimum. That’s your ENTIRE cocktail hour (if you have a long one). You want to enjoy cocktail hour with your guests? Then the first look is for you.
- Reduced Nerves: For many couples, seeing each other in private before walking down the aisle helps calm nerves and adds an extra layer of excitement to the ceremony. It’s easier to show emotions and share the love words without so many people seeing you.
- Private Moment: Your first look is an opportunity to share a quiet moment together, without an audience, which can be particularly special and intimate.
With all the big celebrations after when reception takes over, this will be the ONLY moment where you get to be alone.
Side note: Your wedding doesn’t have to be big to include a first look. This intimate wedding at Palacia Dacha showed just how powerful and beautiful those private moments can be.

Things to consider for First Looks at Weddings
- Timeline Logistics: If you have a tight timeline and want to maximize your time with guests after the ceremony, a first look could be a great way to get some of your photos done earlier.
- Emotional Preferences: Do you want to share that raw, emotional moment in front of your guests, or do you prefer to have it privately between just the two of you?
- Photographer Logistics: A first look can also help your photographer organize the day better. Getting the pictures taken before the ceremony allows you to spend more time with family and friends afterwards.
