Where in the Globe is Iceland?
Iceland is a beautiful country located to the right of Greenland and to the left of the Faroe Islands. The Viking island is well known for its diverse nature, including waterfalls, volcanoes and lava fields, glaciers, geysers, and hot springs.
Some cities in Iceland:
- Reykjavík
- Vik
- Selfoss
- Akureyri
- Húsavík
- Höfn
- Grindavik
- Egilsstaðir
How to travel to Iceland?
The international airport is Keflavík Airport (KEF). It is located 45 minutes from the central city, Reykjavík. Iceland Air and PLAY Airlines are the Icelandic airlines. The drive from KEF to Reykjavík is an easy and very accessible one.
Other smaller airports include Reykjavík Domestic Airport (RKV) and Egilsstaðir Airport. Once you arrive at KEF, the most convenient way to explore Iceland is by car.
How to drive in Iceland?
Route 1 is Iceland’s main road and the most used. This route loops the island in a full circle. The speed limit is 90 km/h during good weather (Spring and Summer). Be mindful of the speed limit! Even though there are not many police cars and not heavy traffic, there are cameras. You’ll get a traffic fine if you’re over the limit. Always have your headlights on, even during the day.
F-roads are very common in Iceland, particularly in the Highlands. A 4×4 vehicle is required by law. I suggest renting one, even if you don’t intend to drive on F-roads, as you can never predict your plans.
Download the “Parka.is” app to pay for parking in the city and touristic locations. You’ll need a credit card with a pin to avoid getting the card locked to pay for gas. Get gas whenever you can; there are parts of Iceland where you won’t find gas stations for a long time.
Now, the fun part…

How to Elope in Iceland?
Why should you have an Iceland Adventure Elopement?
An adventure elopement in Iceland is more than just a wedding day—it’s an unmatched experience in one of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. Imagine saying your vows in a colorful rhyolite mountain, on a secluded black sand beach, or next to the largest glacier in all of Europe. Every moment feels like pure magic, surrounded by Iceland’s raw beauty, endless horizons, and ever-changing skies.
What makes eloping in Iceland so special is the sense of freedom and adventure. Your elopement would feel like a wildly romantic escape. There is no pressure to entertain guests, it’s just the two of you, fully immersed in the moment.
Whether you’re at a remote canyon, exchanging rings next to a waterfall, or celebrating with a soak in a geothermal hot spring, your day is about authentic connection and epic, one-of-a-kind moments.
As an experienced Iceland Elopement Photographer, I can help you plan a seamless, stress-free day while capturing every mesmerizing moment. If you’re dreaming of an elopement that feels wild, intimate, and unreal, an Iceland adventure elopement is exactly what you’re looking for.

FAQ’s About Eloping in Iceland
- Do I need an officiant and witnesses for a symbolic ceremony?
- For symbolic ceremonies, you have complete freedom; no officiant or witnesses are required!
- How can I communicate in Iceland? What’s the official language?
- The official language is Icelandic, but everyone speaks English perfectly.
- Can we include Icelandic traditions in our elopement?
- Yes! Adding an Icelandic touch to your ceremony can make it even more meaningful. Some ideas are:
- Handfasting Ceremony: A Viking-era tradition where your hands are bound with a ribbon to symbolize unity.
- Drinking from a Quaich: A Scottish-Icelandic tradition of sharing a ceremonial drink to signify togetherness.
- Runestone Vows: Engraving your initials or a special rune on a stone and leaving it at your elopement location (ethically and without disturbing nature!).

- Can we elope inside an ice cave?
- Yes! Ice cave elopements are absolutely possible, but they require proper planning. Here’s what to know:
- Ice caves are seasonal and typically accessible only in winter (November–March).

A great approach is to have your ceremony during daylight and then take magical nighttime photos under the aurora if they appear. There are no guarantees, but it’s absolutely worth the attempt!
- Can we elope under a waterfall without getting drenched?
- Many couples love the idea of a waterfall elopement, but some waterfalls (like Seljalandsfoss) can soak you! Here are some stunning dryer options:
- Háifoss – A tall, stunning waterfall with viewpoints that keep you dry.
- Aldeyjarfoss – A unique basalt-column waterfall with fewer crowds.
- Sigöldugljúfur (Valley of Tears) – A hidden gem with multiple small waterfalls in a canyon.

All of them are accessible by car and don’t require hiking!
If you are still dreaming of a waterfall Iceland adventure elopement at Skógafoss or Seljalandsfoss, we can plan for quick, adventurous images and bring extra layers! However, keep in mind that these two are very crowded waterfalls, so I recommend having the ceremony in another location.

Iceland Wedding & Elopement Permits
When eloping internationally, the safest option is getting legally married in your country. However, it’s not impossible to do it in your elopement destination.
– To legally get married in Iceland as a foreigner, you must submit an application form, supporting documents, and a marriage report to the District Commissioner.
- Fill out and sign the Marriage Notification form (Hjónavígsluskýrsla) with your partner and two witnesses.
- Attach original birth certificates for both partners.
– Supporting documents:
- Provide a Certificate of Marital Status from your home country within eight weeks of the wedding.
- Provide valid passports and visas if required. United States citizens are not required to have visas.
- Provide proof of legal stay in Iceland, such as a stamp on your passport or visa.
– Once in Iceland:
- Have two people certify that there are no obstacles to the marriage (Don’t worry, as your photographer, I can step in if needed!)
- Submit the marriage report to the District Commissioner
– Other requirements:
- Submit all documents in original or as certified copies
– Translation:
- If your documents are in a language other than English or Icelandic, have them translated by a certified translator.

The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Iceland
Iceland’s beauty is ever-changing with the seasons, and its weather is unpredictable year-round, so prepare for all possibilities! Here are the pros and cons of every season and, ultimately, when I recommend:
- Summer (June to August):
- Pros: Midnight sun, vibrant green landscapes, and relatively mild temperatures. It is ideal for exploring the Highlands or visiting places like Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss.
- Cons: The crowd. It’s high tourism months and will affect the privacy you’re looking for. Also, there will be no northern lights during June and July since the sun doesn’t set.
- Winter (November to February):
- Pros: Magical snowy landscapes, frozen waterfalls, and possibly catching the Northern Lights.
- Cons: Roads often close, and locations like Landmannalaugar are inaccessible due to weather like extreme wind or snow. Unexpected road closures can leave people stuck with nowhere to go. The F-Roads close from the end of September.
- Shoulder Seasons (Spring/Fall):
- Pros: Fewer tourists, stunning autumn colors, and manageable weather conditions.
- Cons: It’s not impossible, but there are fewer chances to see the northern lights. I saw them once in the last week of August, so it’s always possible.
MY RECOMMENDATION: The best time is the Shoulder Seasons (March-May and end of August, beginning of September).
Where to Stay in Iceland
One of the beauties of Iceland is the AirBnBs. They’re uniquely designed, often featuring large windows or open-air spaces that let you take in the stunning views from the comfort of indoors. Imagine watching the Northern Lights together—whether cozied in bed or relaxing in a private jacuzzi.
If you want to capture the moments before the adventure begins when you’re getting ready, choosing an AirBnB is the best option. From an Iceland Elopement Photographer point of view, book one with big windows to have the Icelandic landscapes as the background and all the beautiful natural light.
Some AirBnB’s are:
- Panorama Glass Lodge
- Iceland Lakeview Retreat
- Eirð Retreat
- Mirror House Iceland
- Near to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
- AURA Retreat
- Entire home in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland

- ATV & Buggy Tours: If you love adrenaline, explore Iceland’s landscapes on top of a ATV!
- Hot Springs: One of Iceland’s most iconic attractions is the hot springs. There are more than 45 hot springs throughout the country.
- Icelandic Horseback Riding: Explore scenic trails on these unique Icelandic horses. They’re iconic!

Final Tips if You’re Eloping in Iceland from an Iceland Elopement Photographer
Iceland is full of surprises! Here are some quirky but practical things to know for your Iceland Adventure Elopement:
- Plan for Extra Days: Build in some flexibility for weather changes or to explore more of Iceland.
- Pack Smart: 100% Wool Layers, waterproof gear, and sturdy footwear are essential for unpredictable weather. If you don’t have any of these, I recommend taking an extra day before your elopement and buying the clothes in Iceland. It’s hard to find adequate clothing for that type of weather, and Scandinavian clothes and gear are the best!
- Respect Nature: Stick to marked trails and follow Leave No Trace principles. Bring a reusable water bottle with you. DO NOT step on moss.
- Icelandic water is the BEST in the world. You don’t need to buy water; you can drink it directly from the tap.
- Download the Aurora app to track the northern lights.
- The wind can be intense, with strong gusts, especially near the coast. Be careful with your car doors!
- You might get photobombed by a sheep or puffin. They’re everywhere!
- Cellphone Reception can be unreliable in remote areas. Always have a backup plan and download the offline map of the whole region.
